More change at Sidmouth

Regular followers of the blog will now I post updates about Sidmouth having featured the cliffs at the eastern end of town frequently since I used them as a case study in an OCR GCSE textbook.

This update was passed to me by by Margaret Mackintosh from earlier in the week.

There's a great video on this news report from Devon Live.

Houses, on Cliff Road, have already lost chunks of their gardens to the sea over the years. Now residents could be banned from carrying out even 'minor' building work on their properties if a new council policy is passed. Locals on Cliff Road say new rules could mean they cannot carry out even basic renovations to their properties - because of their location.

Officials are considering a new coastal change management area (CCMA) for parts of Sidmouth. It is part of a 20-year East Devon scheme which would aim to limit development in areas at significant risk of coastal erosion.

The CCMA could mean proposals for new residential development, including the conversion of existing buildings, would not be permitted. Residents fear that it could limit their ability to develop their homes, build extensions, or even undertake ''minor'' alterations. One resident said if the plan is "far ranging" it will make "houses deteriorate" and "could impact people selling them".

They said: "If those plans were to go ahead it will limit what I will do to the property subject to planning.
