Douglas Adams wrote a book many years ago now with biologist Mark Carwardine. It was called 'Last Chance to See' and was about travelling to see species which were in danger of becoming extinct.
"Last chance tourism" is now on the increase. It is the practice of visiting landscapes and places which are changing as a result of the climate breakdown and which will not be the same as they have been for centuries or millennia before.
This BBC Travel piece by Callie Radke Stevens explores this phenomenon and suggests some ways to reduce its impacts.
Travel and tourism is responsible for between 8% and 11% of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to a 2021 report from the World Travel and Tourism Council.
