Botheredness

I've been a fan of Hywel Roberts' work for a long time, from his early books onwards. I've had the chance to hear him speak and meet up several times in Cologne with his work at Practical Pedagogies.

He was kind enough to come along to my most recent session in 2024.

His 'Botheredness' book is excellent. It's readable and useful and packed full of cultural references - one of which is obvious from the book cover itself.

After a long development, his website is also now launched and is worth exploring at this early stage. There are free and subscription options for accessing the contents.

For Hywel, the curriculum has three elements:

  • The should: academic (the curriculum handbook, the published curriculum which is of no interest to children)
  • The could: how the should is presented to the children in the room via powerful and effective approaches (Let’s Say...)
  • The must: how we are preparing children to be ethical citizens of the world demonstrating optimism and compassion

Oh, and Hywel rhymes with 'towel'.
