On Monday, across Norfolk a lot of people woke up to an icy start - including me.
I leave my house at 6.15ish to travel to Ely and am one of the first out of the village - or through the village. As a result, there was nothing much to start melting the ice.
I could feel my car on the verge of skidding numerous times on the journey to the 'main road', from where things were fine. It was clear that gritting had not taken place.
For the purposes of gritting, Norfolk is split into regions which are different to the administrative regions or other subdivisions of the county.
Norfolk County Council's website has an ArcGIS map of the Winter Gritting Routes. This shows that my village is on a gritting route - and also has 2 grit bins (shown by green triangles).
Use this to check which villages are easiest to leave on an icy morning...
They say:
We grit according to road surface temperature (RST). This is different from the air temperature. We have weather stations located across the county to help measure this. Different areas in the county may receive different treatments at different start times.A day later, they did go out gritting and their Facebook page had this horrible AI image to let everyone know... just use a photo or pay an artist...
