Em Kendall, who is one of the tutors at Slapton Ley Field Studies Centre has written a very useful GA blog post which shows the recent erosion of the road which runs along the bar which separates the freshwater Ley from the sea: the A379 is a road I've driven along quite a few times over the years.
I used to visit Slapton in the 1980s when an undergraduate. In the 1990s I visited with my students and have also been for teacher education and holidayed in the area. My friend and colleague Claire Kyndt worked there as a field tutor herself.
