Chocolate Coated Geographies

Are you familiar with Tony's Chocolonely?

It's a chocolate brand which has become increasingly popular in recent years.

It has distinctive packaging and a chunky shape, with irregular pieces when you open up the packaging. If you are after a food / sustainability etc. case study then this might prove to be a useful brand to focus on.

Their aim is to source all their cocoa from plantations which don't involve slavery or other forms of labour. It's a Dutch company. My daughter visited their special outlet in Amsterdam last year.

I included the company in a book which I helped contribute work to last year when Amsterdam was one of the city case studies. Sadly the whole book may not see the light of day - we shall see...

Their cocoa is mostly sourced from Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. This is the area where 60% of the world's cocoa is produced. They have had a real impact on the industry.

As with other schemes such as Fairtrade, it's important to make appropriate choices when purchasing food.

Chocolate is also a product which has seen some dramatic price increases. Bars which were just £1 a year or so ago are now close to £2 in price. Cocoa is a crop which is particularly affected by excess heat, and when this is followed by rainfall it can lead to diseases.

Easter eggs are appearing in shops - and once again they are smaller for the price you will have to pay - well over £10 for a decent sized egg.
