Would this still be the case if you were a black student, a student from overseas, a student with a challenging home life.... or any of the other individual circumstances sitting in the heads of every student in every class you teach which mean they are not going to have the same thoughts on some of the topics they will encounter in the geography classroom.
This is important for any student.
I wanted this phrase to be in the RGS's response to the consultation on the Curriculum and Assessment Review which took place in 2025.
It was good to see that this phrase was also included in the final review report.
Students need to be able to recognise that what they are studying in geography has relevance to them, or places that they identify with in some way.
They also need to see people like themselves and some stories and language (and places perhaps) they recognise, as well as cultural connections which make sense to them.
More on this in future posts.
