Stories of Place

A new Open Access book from Springer on 'Stories of Place'.

This explores geographies of meaning, memory and connection.

It addresses themes of colonialism, more-than-human agency, environment, atmospheres, borders, dwelling, enchantment, haunting, care and hope, revealing the power of stories to make and unmake worlds.
Contending with the ethical complexities of storytelling and the political implications of the stories that are shared and heard, it illuminates how some stories dominate ways of being and knowing while others are excluded and overlooked. Ultimately, this book demonstrates how stories can provide alternative, critical and progressive ways of knowing and encountering place.

It starts with an interesting quote from Ben Okri, and a link to a talk that he gave on why we tell stories.

Other useful quotes from the opening chapter:

"A sense of place and attachments to place have come to be of particular interest in contemporary geography as the intensity of global economic and environmental changes transform human (and more-than-human) relations with place. Tending to stories, while vital in geography, has been less central."
