The death of A23a

When this iceberg broke off the Filchner Ice Shelf in Antarctica in 1986 it made the news...

The iceberg, known as A23a, was once the largest on Earth, covering an area more than twice the size of Greater London. But after a path full of twists and turns, A23a has melted, fractured and spectacularly disintegrated over the past year.

This BBC interactive piece follows the journey that the ice has been on since 1986 - it briefly threatened the ecosystem of South Georgia when it grounded close to the archipelago but is now breaking up rapidly in the warmer waters further north.

The speed at which it is breaking up and other aspects of its journey are of interest to scientist at the British Antarctic Survey.
