GA Conference 2026 #9: Discover the World's free posters

Visitors to the Discover the World Education stand at the GA conference were able to pick up some new posters.

This one from Karen Corfield explores the idea of 'third places', which I first came across via an article by Richard Bustin in 'Teaching Geography'.

The actual term was defined by Ray Oldenberg.

It refers to spaces outside of home and work (one’s first and second places) where friends and strangers can gather unrushed — like cafes, bars, hair salons, dog parks and gyms. In some conceptions, the term refers to places where you don’t have to buy anything to hang out.
The term filled a linguistic gap — the value of public gathering spaces was well known but there was no term for them His phrase took hold and remains popular.

What are your third places?
What are the third places that your students use?

This was at the heart of the 'My Place' unit which formed part of the OCR Pilot GCSE Geography which I taught in the mid to late 2000s and has influenced a lot of my thinking since.

The posters can be ordered from this link.
