GIS is an emerging part of many teachers' toolkit, but there are still many who don't engage with it.
Andy Funnell has shaped his thoughts in this area into a new Substack post - his first on the platform.
I like his Life Straw analogy as to how GIS 'works'.As with Rob Chambers recent series of GIS posts, this provides some useful guidance and reflection for teachers.
As Andy says:
If geographical enquiry is about asking questions, gathering evidence and making informed decisions, then GIS has become one of the most powerful tools available to support that process. We should not teach GIS because pupils might become GIS specialists.
We should teach GIS because it helps pupils think geographically.
