Joey D'Urso's World Cup Analysis

I've blogged about Joey's work previously as he was the author of the excellent football related book 'More than a Shirt'. This is out in paperback and is well worth getting a copy of.

He has now completed an analysis of the fixtures played in the World Cup, and the historical and political back story to them.

Some of the links are a little tenuous, but there are also some more obvious colonial links to explore.

As he says:

For lots of others, the link is tenuous. Sometimes very tenuous. But those are the fun ones!

For example I’ve figured out that Cape Verde v Saudi Arabia is a clash between two countries who desalinate almost all their water. Australia v Paraguay is a reminder of a bizarre scheme in which Aussie socialists tried to set up a utopia in South America. And Uzbekistan v Colombia… I’ll let you get to that one yourself.

This is on his Substack - subscribe to his newsletter to find out more about his work, and also some events he's going to be doing during the World Cup.
