11th July: World Population Day

Let us stand with young people and build a future where every person can shape their destiny in a world that is fair, peaceful and full of hope.”
UN Secretary-General António Guterres

It is World Population Day today.

The day was started in 1989, influenced by the events in 1987 to mark the 'Day of 5 billion'. How quickly the world's population has grown since then.

The day aims to educate the public on issues of concern and mobilise political will and resources to address global problems. As the world's primary institution for counting and mapping population trends, the UN also marks major milestones of demographic change, such as the world reaching 7 billion in 2011, and 8 billion in 2022.
