The Tour de France gets underway today. This is my favourite sporting event, and I try to watch the coverage of every stage from start to finish as much as possible. The Grand Depart is from Barcelona this year - and the first stage is a time trial.
The Tour is a 3 week lesson on the geography, geology and history of France.
It’s compelling and a disgrace that you have to pay to watch it all this year.
The route is interesting. It’s a clockwise year, but most of the NW of France is not visited - the southerly focus will perhaps intensify the heat experienced by the riders.
