Aidan Hesslewood wrote a very interesting article in the Summer 2026 issue of ‘Teaching Geography’journal. He explored the idea of hopeful geographies. If you are a subscriber you should have your physical copy by now or can download it from the GA website, and if you’re not, you can add it to your GA membership perhaps.

Mark Enser wrote a very good response to the piece on his Substack which respectfully explored some of the arguments that Aidan had put forward in his piece. This is how debate is supposed to work. This is a thoughtful, well written and useful piece given the need to be hopeful for the young people we teach as a safeguarding issue.I ‘hope’ you get the chance to read both pieces.
My latest read is a new book I bought earlier in the week that goes into detail on how some countries are tackling the major issues that all countries face now (or will in the future).
