Preparing for Curriculum Review

The next phase of the CAR (Curriculum and Assessment Review) is now due to take place in September sometime - hopefully early September.

Earlier today Rob Chambers posted a Substack reflection of an event hosted by AQA where he suggested some of the key questions that teachers should be considering when they see the draft subject content for Geography (which will ultimately feed into the proposed contents of updated GCSE specifications). OCR had already prepared those (and I worked on a textbook for it, which was completed, but then mothballed).

He suggests five areas that are emerging from review discussions so far.

  1. Updating content requirements so that geography is more representative of the world pupils are learning about.
  2. Giving greater prominence to disciplinary knowledge: not just what pupils know, but how geographers think, enquire and make sense of the world.
  3. Strengthening the thread of climate change and sustainability across the specification.
  4. Reinforcing the value of fieldwork.
  5. Supporting smoother progression across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5.
The piece finishes with some key questions that teachers should consider.

Another key message in Rob's piece is that as many geography teachers as possible should respond to the consultation. Please don't leave it to the RGS and the GA to be the only voices.

Having said that, the RGS is keen to collect the views of members and Fellows from the teaching profession as always.

The RGS will have Focus groups, and also be collecting responses in a form too for ease of access.

The RGS Education Committee which I chair will be particularly interested in what you have to say.

Use this link to sign up to join one of our Focus groups to discuss the proposals when they emerge. I look forward to chatting with you.

The RGS will have a RAG (Red, Amber, Green) framework for you and your departments to assess what you already have covered well, identify gaps, and prioritise areas for development.

The RGS will also be creating new resources mapped out against the new requirements, as well as offering CPD to support teachers in new areas or where changes are greatest.

Do you have any other comments to make? Please send an email to responses@rgs.org

These will be picked up by the Education Team.
