PTI Geography Symposium #3: Afternoon of Day 1 - Climate Change focus

After lunch it was a change of venue. The Education / Summit Room was (ironically given the content of the next two sessions) too hot for comfort, so we moved to the much cooler (and comfortable) Ondaatje Theatre.

First up was Emeritus Professor Bill McGuire.

He has written extensively about climate change and the atmosphere before.

I have a copy of his latest book 'The Fate of the World' which is not the cheeriest read, and Bill proceeded to set out his bleak prognosis for humanity as a result of the CO2 we have put into the atmosphere. We are going to return to one of three previous climate periods with different characteristics, depending on the actions we decide to take in the coming years. We could see some tipping points reached much earlier than previous predictions suggested. A person could get a bit depressed about this.

After a brief comfort break it was back to the theatre for a 2nd climate change session with a different focus... pointing out that there are lots of perspectives on the issue, which can be both contradictory but also true...

This session was by Dr. Olivia Taylor of the University of Sussex.

She provided a different perspective on the issue, and plenty on the actions that could be taken and the role of geography in explaining it.

There was a creative session involving Lego and lots of conversations to follow, and then the first day was over and it was time to head for the accommodation.
