The Danube: a river in crisis

The Observer had a long read on the River Danube

Lorenzo Tondo travelled 100 miles along a river which had dropped to its lowest ever levels.

The low flow had already exposed sunken Nazi ships from World War II along with a Nazi motorcycle.

The piece mentions the “rock of starvation” (Ínség-szikla) which has been revealed. This was a warning from previous centuries that the low flow would impact on food production.
