Geography Hacks

Victoria Fowell is the new Geography Subject Advisor at Pearson, replacing Jon Wolton.

She has recorded several short videos where she shares some Geography Hacks.

Take a look here.

Pearson / Edexcel Geography Focus groups

Pearson will be running some focus groups for Edexcel GCSE Geography during half-term week in October (27th-31st) looking at the new proposals for 2016 GCSE Geography.

The focus groups will take place either in the morning or afternoon (depending on participant availability) in 2 locations (Central London and Manchester) with an incentive of £70 Amazon vouchers per participant (e-vouchers will be sent out shortly after the sessions).

As part of this exercise, there will be a short pre-task which will involve some background reading.

If you teach Edexcel GCSE Geography A, are a Head of Department/Subject and are interested in participating in a focus group discussion, please complete this short survey which you can access from this link https://schools.pearsonpanel.com/R.aspx?a=703

We do, unfortunately, have limited availability and are seeking a mix of teaching backgrounds. However, we will make every effort to involve as many teachers as possible in our research. The link will only be live until 9 am on Monday 13 October.

Primary Quality Mark and Curriculum 2014

For the last few years, I've been part of a team which has moderated applications for the Geographical Association's Primary Geography Quality Mark.

This is a great privilege as I am able to see some great practice from schools around the country. I'm currently reading through my batch of portfolios and writing my reports which will then be discussed on the moderation day next Friday.
There are some really nice ideas and work from enthusiastic teachers and students.

If you're in London on the 3rd of July, there's a useful event that you could come to.

This is the final of a series of events aimed at preparing Primary teachers for the changes to the Primary Curriculum.

The event at the Kia Oval is described in the link.
There are workshops for each of the main subjects provided by subject associations.
There's also a Keynote address by Professor Robin Alexander

Workshops
English and Foreign Languages: UK Literacy Association (UKLA) and the Association for
Language Learning (ALL)
Maths and Computing: Association of Teachers of Mathematics (ATM) and
the National Association of Advisors for Computers in Education (NAACE)
Art & Design and Music: National Society for Education in Art and Design (NSEAD) and The UK Association for Music Education (Music Mark)
D&T and Science: The Design and Technology Association (DATA) and The Association for Science Education (ASE)
History and Geography: The Historical Association (HA) and The Geographical

Come along and work and meet up with Dr. Paula Owens and myself...

A chance to work on the Global Learning Project

I blogged earlier about the signing of a Global Learning Project involving DfID, Pearson and a number of organisations, including the Geographical Association. Had this gone ahead when it was originally planned, around 2010, I would still have a job, but sadly it was delayed and then its scale was altered slightly. The project as it now stands is described HERE on the GA website.

Some job opportunities were announced at the weekend for people to work on the project for a fixed period of time.
These range from national project leader to more regional and school based project co-ordinators. Worth a look if you fancy a change in role, and a few years focussed on global learning.

The vacancies will also appear on the Guardian jobs site soon and will be linked back to the Pearson’s website so that all applicants will be able to view them in one place. The jobs will be on the sites for two weeks.

While we're at it, there's also a job going working with Richard Allaway at the International School of Geneva. Worth a look if you fancy some time abroad...

If anyone else has a teaching vacancy they want me to advertise my rates are very reasonable... :)
